FIJI currently lacks a national policy or health protocols specifically addressing menopause, as confirmed by Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Medical Services. He emphasized that any future policy or strategy will necessitate extensive consultations with stakeholders, including health partners, community groups, and the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection.

Dr. Tudravu highlighted the limited data available on menopause, which is largely confined to patients who seek assistance at health facilities. He stressed the importance of developing national guidelines to help healthcare providers diagnose and manage menopause effectively. Women experiencing menopausal symptoms are encouraged to consult their local health facilities or general practitioners, and those with severe symptoms may be referred to main hospitals where hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is available.

The effort to create more comprehensive policies aligns with growing concerns regarding menopause in Fiji, especially as the country’s population ages. Previous articles have pointed out the significant impact of menopause on women’s lives, including challenges such as workplace absenteeism due to unmanaged symptoms, along with the emotional and social implications of this life transition. Initiatives from organizations like the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement advocate for increased awareness and open discussions about menopause, which are critical for fostering supportive environments for women.

Dr. Tudravu also noted that collaboration with partners like Medical Services Pacific and the Reproductive and Family Health Association of Fiji is ongoing to ensure women receive the necessary guidance and support. Discussions surrounding the recognition of women’s health issues like menopause signify a positive shift toward more comprehensive care.

As Fiji continues to address the health needs of women and supports the development of menopause-related policies, there is hope that the community can foster a culture that encourages understanding and compassionate support for women navigating this challenging life stage. The goal is not only to recognize menopause as a natural phase but also to provide the necessary care and support, improving the overall well-being of women in Fiji as they age.
