Fiji Faces Japan in Thrilling Pacific Nations Cup Final Showdown

The Flying Fijians, the current champions of the Pacific Nations Cup, will enter Sunday’s final in Osaka as the underdogs against Japan. The Japanese team, coached by Eddie Jones, is riding high after a decisive 49-27 victory over Manu Samoa in the semi-final held in Tokyo on Sunday night.

Japan showcased an impressive display of attacking rugby, scoring six tries to Samoa’s three, and their progress under Jones is evident as he continues to reshape the squad. Jones expressed his team’s determination to win the final, emphasizing the need for improved defense around the ruck to secure the trophy for the first time since 2019. “Our only aim is to win the final,” he stated, acknowledging the quality of the Fijian team they will be facing.

In the semi-final, Japan dominated in the first half, scoring four tries while Samoa managed only one. Dylan Riley opened the scoring early, capitalizing on pressure deep in Samoa’s territory. Following a penalty try conceded by Samoa due to a sin-binning, the hosts continued to build momentum. Seungsin Lee’s well-timed kick-pass enabled Tomoki Osada to score Japan’s third try, and shortly before halftime, Lee added a try of his own after a rapid series of plays.

Despite being under pressure, Samoa displayed resilience, with Tuna Tuitama managing to score during a temporary player disadvantage. Rodney Iona’s two penalties kept them in contention at halftime.

The second half saw Lee, playing in a new position, break through Samoa’s defense again to assist Kanji Shimokawa for Japan’s fifth try. Samoa responded with a score from Melani Matavao, narrowing the gap. Japan quickly bounced back, as Shinobu Fujiwara darted over for another try, and Lalomilo Lalomilo managed a spectacular 80m counter-attack score for Samoa.

As fatigue set in, Japan executed a well-structured play to set up Taichi Takahashi’s final try, with Lee successfully converting and maintaining his perfect kicking record for the tournament. Samoa’s captain, Theo McFarland, lamented his team’s discipline, citing errors and a weak set piece as key issues that hindered their performance throughout the match.
