A significant weather event is approaching Fiji, as the Nadi weather office reports that Tropical Disturbance 09F, currently located to the far northeast of the islands, is expected to track southwards and gradually intensify. As it enters Fiji waters by late Sunday, it may be classified as a tropical depression.
The Fiji Meteorological Services indicate that there will be strong to near gale-force winds affecting parts of the country starting tomorrow, with conditions expected to spread throughout the islands by Monday. A strong wind warning has already been issued for the Northern Division and the northeastern areas of Viti Levu, particularly extending from Tailevu North to Rakiraki, and includes the Yasawa, Mamanuca, Lau, Lomaiviti groups, and Kadavu.
Additionally, a heavy rain alert has been raised for the entire Northern Division and Yasawa Group, with warnings also affecting the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, as well as parts of eastern Viti Levu. Residents should brace for robust winds, potentially reaching speeds of 50 km/h, with gusts up to 65 km/h, and prepare for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms particularly in vulnerable regions.
Past disturbances, like TD01F, remind us of the importance of community preparedness and awareness in the face of severe weather. While adverse conditions present challenges, there is a hopeful perspective that community solidarity will help mitigate the impacts, allowing residents to navigate these weather events collectively.
As preparations begin, residents are encouraged to stay informed through local updates, reinforce their emergency plans, and support one another during this period of potential adversities.
