A low-pressure trough is currently hovering over the Fiji Islands, bringing with it clouds and substantial rainfall. According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, this weather pattern is slowly advancing to the east. Showers are anticipated to impact various regions of the group throughout the day. Specific areas forecasted to receive occasional rain include Suva, Nausori, Tailevu, Sigatoka, the Coral Coast, as well as the inland regions of Ra-Rakiraki, Naitasiri, Serua, Namosi, Lau, and the Lomaiviti Group.
In other parts of the islands, there will be overcast skies accompanied by showers, with the potential for afternoon or evening thunderstorms. Some areas may experience localized heavy rainfall, which raises concerns for flash flooding in low-lying and vulnerable regions.
Looking ahead to Sunday, the forecast suggests cloudiness with intermittent showers across the greater Suva-Nausori-Tailevu areas, the interior of Ra-Rakiraki, as well as Naitasiri and Serua-Namosi regions, along with Southern Bua and Cakaudrove. The Lomaiviti Group and Lau will also see similar conditions, while other areas may remain dry with the possibility of isolated showers later in the day.
As residents prepare for the weather, it’s important to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during these rain events. While the current heavy showers may pose challenges, it’s an opportunity for the regions affected to refill water sources and nourish the local agriculture, contributing positively to the ecosystem in the long run.
