The Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Sakiasi Ditoka, has urged Fijians to minimize movement as heavy rains and flooding impact the nation. During a press conference at the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), he advised the public to cancel gatherings and stay home for their safety. The Fiji Police Force will enforce restrictions on movement and gatherings, with Mr. Ditoka emphasizing that travel should only occur when absolutely necessary.

An active trough of low pressure is causing persistent rain and severe weather across Fiji, with flood warnings issued for low-lying areas. In recent flooding, two homes in Semo Village and nine in Nalele, Nadroga, have been partially damaged, though no casualties have been reported. Several roads are obstructed, and six evacuation centers in the Western Division are currently sheltering 312 evacuees.

The breakdown of evacuee numbers includes:

– Andrews Primary School: 183
– Saioni Church: 33
– Korovuto Secondary School: 14
– Vou Dance Group office: 7
– Nalele Community Hall: 69
– Tavua District Primary School: 9

The Minister expressed appreciation for the Fiji Police Force’s role in ensuring the safe evacuation of affected families.

In light of rising health risks, the Ministry of Health has issued warnings regarding waterborne diseases such as typhoid and diarrhea. Dr. Tudravu has advised residents to boil drinking water and store it in clean containers. Parents are urged to keep children away from potentially contaminated floodwaters. Officials are also encouraging communities to store essential items, food, medicine, and hygiene products in elevated areas.

As a call for community responsibility, Mr. Ditoka has encouraged families and community leaders to collaborate with the Government. He implored heads of households to ensure their families have enough food, water, emergency supplies, and medications to last several days.

Fijians are reminded to remain vigilant, adhere to safety guidelines, and prioritize health and hygiene during these trying times.

This situation highlights the resilience of communities when faced with natural disasters, as families come together to support each other and follow governmental guidance for their safety.
