A Topical Disturbance (TD 01F) is expected to bring heavy rainfall to the Fiji Group over the next day, with a low likelihood of developing into a Tropical Cyclone. The Fiji Meteorological Service reported that TD01F is currently positioned approximately 240 kilometers west of Yasawa-i-rara and 270 kilometers west-northwest of Nadi. The system is advancing southeast at a speed of around 20 kilometers per hour.
In response to the weather conditions, a heavy rain warning has been issued for the entire Fiji group. Additionally, a strong wind warning is active for coastal areas, particularly in the western and northern sections of Viti Levu, including the regions from Sigatoka to Nadi, Lautoka, and Ba, extending through Tavua to Rakiraki. Other areas of concern include the interior of Ba, Ra, and Nadroga/Navosa, as well as the Yasawa and Mamanuca Islands, and parts of Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Lau, and Lomaiviti.
Flood alerts have been issued for areas that are prone to flooding, particularly those adjacent to and downstream of major rivers in Fiji. A flash flood warning is also in effect for low-lying areas, especially on Vanua Levu and in the interior and western parts of Viti Levu. Significant rainfall, which could include heavy downpours and thunderstorms, is expected as TD01F approaches, resulting in stronger northwest winds as the system nears by later today.
As TD01F continues its approach, the potential for localized heavy rainfall raises concerns about flash flooding in already saturated areas. River levels across Fiji are anticipated to rise as the disturbance brings more rain.
This situation highlights the importance of preparedness and vigilance in light of changing weather conditions. Authorities and communities are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period of expected adverse weather. It’s a reminder of the resilience of Fiji’s communities and their ability to navigate through challenging weather conditions.
