A topical disturbance, designated as TD 01F, is currently moving towards the Fiji Group and has the potential to bring heavy rain until tomorrow. Located approximately 240 kilometers west of Yasawa-i-rara, or 270 kilometers northwest of Nadi, TD 01F is advancing southeast at a speed of about 20 kilometers per hour.
The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a heavy rain warning for the entire region, while a strong wind warning is in effect for the coastal areas of western and northern Viti Levu, including Sigatoka to Nadi, Lautoka, Ba through Tavua to Rakiraki, and other locations such as the interior of Ba, Ra, Nadroga/Navosa, Yasawa, Mamanuca groups, Vatulele, Kadavu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, as well as Lau and Lomaiviti groups.
A flood alert is active for flood-prone areas adjacent to major rivers in Fiji, and a flash flood warning applies to low-lying areas and small streams in Vanua Levu and the interior and western parts of Viti Levu. Rainfall is expected to be heavy at times, accompanied by thunderstorms as TD 01F approaches. Localized heavy rainfall could exacerbate flash flooding risks in areas already saturated with water.
As TD 01F nears, the levels of major rivers across the country are anticipated to rise due to the additional downpour, posing a risk to communities along these waterways.
In light of this weather disturbance, authorities encourage residents to stay informed and prepared. While heavy rains pose challenges, it is also an opportunity for communities to come together, support one another, and ensure safety measures are in place. With proper preparation, the potential impact of TD 01F can be minimized, underscoring the resilience of the Fiji community in facing natural challenges.
