Tropical Cyclone Rae made landfall in Fiji yesterday, causing significant damage on Cicia Island in the Lau Group with its strong winds and heavy rains. Dr. Rusila Tikoitoga, the medical officer on Cicia, reported that the storm resulted in roofs being partially blown off homes, damage to farms, and floodwaters entering the village. Fortunately, there have been no injuries reported despite the cyclone’s fierce conditions.

By 6 PM, the cyclone was tracked approximately 80 kilometers east-northeast of Moala and about 70 kilometers south of Cicia, with wind speeds reaching dangerous levels of up to 90 km/h. The cyclone is expected to continue on a south-southwest trajectory, prompting officials to advise residents to remain vigilant and prepared for additional weather disturbances.

Dr. Tikoitoga noted that four families have sought refuge in a school evacuation center, while others have found safety elsewhere. The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has activated 18 evacuation centers across the Northern Division to provide shelter for communities affected or at risk from the severe weather.

Warnings have been issued by the Fiji Meteorological Service across multiple islands, highlighting concerns over flooding and heavy rainfall. Authorities stress the significance of community solidarity and preparedness, as evidenced by past weather events where collective efforts have proven crucial for safety.

In light of these challenges, the situation showcases the resilient spirit of the Fijian people. Local leaders are advocating for vigilance, and many residents are taking proactive steps to secure their properties and support one another as they confront the storm. This resilience instills hope that together, the communities can endure and overcome this adversity.

The public is encouraged to remain informed and prepared, reaching out to local emergency contacts for assistance to ensure a unified approach in facing the challenges posed by Tropical Cyclone Rae.
