The Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Sakiasi Ditoka, has urged Fijians to refrain from unnecessary movement as the country faces heavy rain and flooding. During a press conference at the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), he recommended that the public cancel any gatherings and stay home to ensure their safety amid the severe weather conditions.
Mr. Ditoka confirmed that the Fiji Police Force would implement restrictions on movement and gatherings, emphasizing that people should only travel if absolutely necessary. The Fiji Meteorological Service has indicated that an active trough of low pressure is bringing persistent rain and heavy downpours, and flood warnings are in effect for low-lying areas.
As a result of the flooding, two homes in Semo Village and nine in Nalele, Nadroga, sustained partial damage, but fortunately, there have been no reported casualties. Several roads are currently impassable, and six evacuation centers in the Western Division are sheltering 312 evacuees, with specific counts provided for each location.
The Minister expressed appreciation for the police’s efforts in safely evacuating affected families. However, health risks are rising, prompting the Ministry of Health to issue urgent warnings about potential waterborne diseases like typhoid and diarrhea. Dr. Tudravu has advised residents to boil all drinking water and store it properly, while also cautioning parents to keep children away from potentially contaminated floodwaters.
Communities are encouraged to stock essential items and maintain hygiene practices, with public health officials actively conducting awareness campaigns in impacted areas, including Nadi. Mr. Ditoka called on families and community leaders to collaborate with the government by ensuring their households have adequate food, water, emergency supplies, and medications.
Fijians are reminded to stay alert, observe safety guidelines, and prioritize health and hygiene during this challenging time.
This situation, while serious, evokes a strong sense of community responsibility and resilience. The collaboration between individuals and authorities showcases the spirit of solidarity among Fijians, providing hope that through collective effort, they will navigate these trying conditions together.
