The Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Sakiasi Ditoka, has urged Fijians to refrain from unnecessary travel as the nation faces heavy rain and flooding. In a press conference held at the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), Mr. Ditoka called for the cancellation of gatherings and advised the public to remain indoors for safety during these extreme weather conditions.
The Fiji Police Force will implement restrictions on movement and gatherings to ensure public safety. The Fiji Meteorological Service has reported an active trough of low pressure bringing persistent heavy rainfall and has issued flood warnings for low-lying areas.
Several homes have been partially damaged in Semo Village and Nalele, Nadroga, but fortunately, no casualties have been reported. Current conditions have made several roads impassable, leading to the establishment of six evacuation centers in the Western Division, currently sheltering 312 evacuees. The distribution of these evacuees is as follows:
– Andrews Primary School: 183
– Saioni Church: 33
– Korovuto Secondary School: 14
– Vou Dance Group office: 7
– Nalele Community Hall: 69
– Tavua District Primary School: 9
Mr. Ditoka expressed his appreciation for the police efforts in ensuring the safe evacuation of families affected by the floods. Alongside these challenges, the Ministry of Health is warning about the potential rise of waterborne diseases such as typhoid and diarrhea due to flooding. Residents are advised to boil drinking water and store it safely while keeping children away from contaminated floodwaters.
In light of the current situation, Mr. Ditoka has called on families and community leaders to collaborate with the government to ensure that households are stocked with essential supplies such as food, water, and medications for the coming days. Fijians are reminded to remain vigilant, adhere to safety guidelines, and prioritize health and hygiene during this trying period.
As the country faces this adversity, it is a time for the community to come together, support one another, and take proactive measures to safeguard their health and wellbeing. By working collaboratively, Fijians can weather this storm and emerge stronger.
In summary, the government is actively responding to the severe weather and flooding in Fiji, emphasizing public safety and community cooperation. This situation highlights the importance of preparedness and communal support during challenging times.
