The Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Sakiasi Ditoka, has urged Fijians to limit their movements as heavy rains and flooding impact the country. During a press conference at the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), Mr. Ditoka advised the public to cancel gatherings and stay at home, highlighting that the Fiji Police Force would enforce restrictions on movement and assemblies.
He stressed the importance of safety during such extreme weather conditions, stating, “Only move when it is absolutely necessary.” The Fiji Meteorological Service reported an active trough of low pressure currently affecting the region, with heavy rain expected to continue. Flood warnings remain in effect for low-lying areas.
As a response to the adverse weather, evacuations are already in progress. Two houses in Semo Village and nine in Nalele, Nadroga have sustained partial flood damage, although fortunately, there have been no reported casualties. Various roads are currently impassable, and six evacuation centers in the Western Division are accommodating 312 evacuees.
The breakdown of evacuee numbers includes facilities such as Andrews Primary School with 183 evacuees, Saioni Church with 33, and several others. Minister Ditoka expressed gratitude towards the police for ensuring the safe evacuation of those affected.
Health risks are escalating, prompting the Ministry of Health to issue urgent warnings regarding waterborne diseases like typhoid and diarrhea. Dr. Tudravu has advised residents to boil all drinking water and store it safely. He cautions parents to keep their children away from potentially contaminated floodwaters. Communities are being encouraged to store essential supplies, food, and medicines in elevated spaces, and public health officials are actively conducting awareness initiatives in impacted areas, particularly Nadi.
Mr. Ditoka called upon families and community leaders to collaborate with government efforts, urging heads of households to ensure they have adequate food, water, emergency supplies, and medications for several days.
Fijians are reminded to maintain vigilance, adhere to safety protocols, and prioritize health and hygiene as they navigate these challenging times.
By emphasizing community responsibility, there is hope that through collective effort and awareness, the nation can better respond to this crisis and emerge stronger.
