A flood alert is currently active for regions in Fiji that are vulnerable to flooding, particularly those situated near and downstream of the country’s major rivers. According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, rainfall in the Northern division over the past 24 hours has been recorded between 30mm and 47mm.
While water levels in all major rivers remain below the flood alert thresholds, authorities continue to issue flash flood warnings for low-lying areas, small streams, and regions prone to sudden flooding in the Northern division.
The weather patterns indicate that an active trough of low pressure, along with associated clouds and rain, is slowly moving over the Northeastern parts of Fiji. As a consequence, heavy rain is anticipated later in the day for the Yasawa and Mamanuca group, Northern Division, Northern Lau Group, as well as the western half and interior areas of Viti Levu.
In summary, while the situation currently shows manageable water levels, the potential for heavy rainfall remains a concern. It’s important that residents stay vigilant and prepared for any changes in weather conditions.
On a hopeful note, ongoing monitoring and timely alerts from the Fiji Meteorological Service are essential in ensuring the safety of communities, allowing them to take necessary precautions to avoid potential flooding issues.
