The Fiji Meteorological Service has reported that the recent flash floods in various parts of the country were caused by heavy rainfall coinciding with high tides. In a special weather bulletin issued at 5:00 PM, the agency placed a flash flood warning for all low-lying areas and small streams in the Sigatoka region, known for being particularly vulnerable to such incidents.
According to the weather office, significant rainfall has been observed over the past hour, leading to flooding in Sigatoka town and on Lawaqa Road, as well as other low-lying locations. The alert also extends to areas across Vanua Levu, greater Lami, Suva, Nausori, Tailevu, and Naitasiri, where similar conditions are expected.
It’s essential for residents in these areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions during this period of hazardous weather. This situation highlights the ongoing challenges posed by extreme weather conditions globally and underlines the importance of community preparedness in times of natural crises.
In summary, the heavy rainfall and high tides contributing to flash floods serve as a reminder of the impact of climate-related events on daily life. With effective communication from meteorological services and proactive responses from communities, there is hope for resilience against such environmental challenges in the future.
