A flash flood alert is currently in effect for the entire nation of Fiji due to ongoing heavy rainfall. The National Weather Forecasting Center in Nadi has indicated that a slow-moving trough of low pressure is persisting over the islands, with forecasts suggesting that these conditions will continue into the coming week.
Authorities have expressed concern that localized heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding, particularly in vulnerable areas such as drainage systems, small streams, low-water bridges, and roads, especially those located in low-lying communities.
According to the Fiji Meteorological Office, the alert has been issued based on insights from the Fiji Flash Flood Guidance System, rainfall prediction models, and weather radar assessments. The weather today has been predominantly cloudy with sporadic rain, influenced by Tropical Disturbance TD03F, located to the southwest near the Solomon Islands. This disturbance is coupled with a trough that extends southeastward, impacting Rotuma, Fiji, and Tonga, while another trough affects the Southern Cook Islands.
The region is currently experiencing a north to northeast wind flow, and the Fiji Meteorological Service warns that the underlying troughs and TD03F might generate intermittent showers and gusty winds in the upcoming days.
Residents are strongly advised to remain vigilant, stay updated with official weather forecasts, and take appropriate precautions, particularly in areas prone to flooding. Authorities are actively monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates to the public as conditions change. This proactive stance from both the government and meteorological services aims to ensure the safety and preparedness of all residents during this weather event.
