A flash flood alert is currently in effect for small streams and low-lying areas across the interior and eastern sections of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu in Fiji. This warning stems from a slow-moving trough of low pressure that continues to produce cloud and rain in Fiji’s northwestern and northern regions, and is projected to drift northward.

According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, a heavy rain alert is also still valid for the interior and eastern parts of Viti Levu. Forecasts predict occasional rain, with heavy downpours expected at times, along with some thunderstorms. Fortunately, the rain is anticipated to transition to lighter showers from tomorrow.

This situation mirrors previous alerts as recent weather patterns have been influenced by similar troughs, resulting in heightened concerns about localized flooding in vulnerable areas. The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) continues to stress the importance of safety and has advised residents in the affected regions to remain vigilant and follow official warnings closely. In particular, communities in the Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, as well as those on Viti Levu and nearby islands, are encouraged to stay alert to changing conditions.

As rainfall begins to ease, a hopeful outlook emerges: clear skies may be on the horizon soon, providing relief from the current weather challenges. Reminding residents of the importance of preparedness, the NDMO urges everyone to keep informed and safe during this period of inclement weather.
