The Fiji Police Force has reported a total of 6,659 drug-related cases in the past five years, with the peak of 1,615 incidents occurring last year. Acting Police Commissioner Sakeo Raikaci disclosed these figures during the opening of the Director of Public Prosecutions Annual Conference in Sigatoka.

Raikaci pointed out that the significant 31% decrease in drug cases reported in 2021 was primarily due to the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, he emphasized that this reduction did not indicate a genuine decline in drug involvement within the community.

The Fiji Police are actively working to combat drug offenses through community engagement and various operations, which have led to numerous arrests and prosecutions, especially during the ongoing festive season. Raikaci noted that the police are reaching out to schools, churches, and community meetings to raise awareness and prevent drug-related issues.

Additionally, he acknowledged the government’s commitment to addressing drug problems, including the creation of a new Narcotics Bureau. Raikaci urged legal professionals to weigh the government’s anti-drug initiatives against the rights of individuals charged with drug offenses as they perform their duties.

The DPP Conference, where these pressing issues were discussed, is set to conclude today.

This article highlights the ongoing challenges and efforts in Fiji to address drug-related issues, showcasing a proactive approach by law enforcement and community engagement. It reflects the importance of balancing legal rights with public safety initiatives as the country navigates these complex matters.
