The Fiji Police Force has reported a total of 6,659 drug-related cases over the past five years, with a peak of 1,615 cases recorded last year alone. Acting Commissioner of Police, Sakeo Raikaci, presented these statistics during the opening of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Annual Conference in Sigatoka.

Raikaci noted that a significant drop of 31% in drug cases in 2021 can be attributed to COVID-19 restrictions; however, he emphasized that this decline does not indicate a reduction in drug involvement among the population. The Fiji Police continues to engage in community awareness initiatives and operations that result in numerous arrests and prosecutions, especially during the ongoing festive season operations.

“We are actively going to schools, churches, communities, and provincial meetings as part of our outreach efforts. Our festive season operations are leading to more arrests,” explained Raikaci. He also acknowledged the government’s commitment to combat narcotics, pointing out the establishment of a new Narcotics Bureau to strengthen their efforts.

Raikaci encouraged lawyers to weigh the government’s anti-drug initiatives against the rights of individuals involved in drug offenses when performing their legal duties.

The DPP Conference is set to conclude today, aiming to enhance collaboration and effectiveness in law enforcement and prosecution regarding drug-related issues.

This ongoing commitment to tackling drug-related challenges reflects a positive move towards creating a safer environment for all citizens in Fiji. The emphasis on community engagement and government support may pave the way for future improvements in combating drug issues effectively.
