The Fiji Police Force has reported a total of 6,659 drug-related cases over the last five years, with the peak occurring last year at 1,615 cases. Acting Police Commissioner Sakeo Raikaci presented these figures during the annual conference of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in Sigatoka.

Raikaci explained that a significant 31% decrease in drug cases in 2021 was primarily linked to COVID-19 restrictions; however, he emphasized that this decline does not necessarily indicate reduced drug involvement among the population. The police are actively working to combat drug issues through community outreach programs and targeted operations, which have led to numerous arrests, especially during the festive season.

He underlined the government’s dedication to addressing drug-related challenges, including the formation of a new Narcotics Bureau. Raikaci called on legal practitioners to weigh the government’s anti-drug initiatives against the rights of individuals implicated in drug offenses while performing their duties.

The DPP Conference is set to conclude today.

This report underscores the ongoing struggle against drug-related issues in Fiji while highlighting the proactive stance of law enforcement and government in addressing these challenges. Despite the obstacles, the commitment to raise awareness and combat drug trafficking is promising for the future of community safety.
