The Fiji Police Force is currently investigating around 650 scam cases, a significant rise in concerns surrounding cybercrime in the region. Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, disclosed this information during the Regional Workshop for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) at Shangri-La Yanuca Island in Nadroga.
Mr. Turaga highlighted a particularly tragic case involving a woman from the Western Division who fell victim to a cyber extortion scheme, losing nearly half a million dollars. The scam involved threats to release intimate photos online, illustrating the escalating dangers posed by cybercriminals. The perpetrator, whom the victim believed was located outside Fiji, was actually based locally. Despite realizing the threat was coming from within her own country, the victim felt compelled to make payments, hoping to prevent the release of her photos.
“This type of crime knows no borders,” Turaga stated, emphasizing that women are frequently targeted as they seek companionship and trust online, only to fall prey to deceitful individuals. He also mentioned a related fraudulent M-Paisa transaction scheme linked to fake eBay listings for equipment, which has collectively cost victims over $600,000.
In response to these growing threats, Mr. Turaga noted that the government is committed to enhancing its legal framework and building capacity within its law enforcement agencies to tackle cybercrime more effectively. The ODPP is collaborating with international partners to improve local capabilities, with a focus on training in electronic evidence collection and understanding cybercrime legislation.
Turaga stressed the importance of evolving alongside the nature of crime, ensuring that law enforcement and legal practitioners are prepared for these challenges.
This commitment to bolstering legal and enforcement measures signifies a proactive approach ahead of the increasingly sophisticated landscape of cybercrime. By enhancing training and resource capabilities, the Fiji government aims to protect its citizens and promote safer online environments, showcasing a determined effort in the face of evolving criminal tactics.
