Beyond the headline

The Pacific Sexual and Gender Diversity Network (PSGDN) has voiced significant concerns regarding the persistent use of religious platforms in Fiji to propagate harmful and discriminatory rhetoric against LGBTQI+ communities. Loata Tucika, the Interim Chief Executive Officer of PSGDN, highlighted that the organization has not only observed this troubling trend but has also received reports from national member organizations in Fiji. These reports indicate that some religious leaders are utilizing places of worship, free-to-air television, and social media channels to promote stigmatizing messages aimed at already vulnerable groups.

Tucika emphasized that places of worship should serve as sanctuaries of care, compassion, and guidance, rather than venues for promoting hate or division. She pointed out that when religious leaders leverage their platforms to dehumanize others, the ramifications go far beyond mere words. The rhetoric can instill fear, legitimize discrimination, and endanger lives.

While acknowledging the fundamental rights of freedom of religion and freedom of expression, Tucika stressed that these rights come with accompanying responsibilities, especially for those who wield moral authority and public influence. She asserted that religious leaders, who are tasked with providing spiritual guidance, should refrain from inciting hostility or justifying harm against LGBTQI+ individuals. Personal beliefs should not be manipulated to promote exclusion under the guise of faith.

In response to these troubling behaviors, PSGDN has called on religious leaders in Fiji to concentrate on their core spiritual duties and avoid utilizing religious or media platforms to disseminate divisive rhetoric. The organization also encouraged the Online Safety Commission to closely monitor broadcasts where religious discourse veers into harmful or discriminatory speech.

“Broadcast platforms must not serve as safe havens for unchecked rhetoric that undermines dignity, safety, and social cohesion,” Tucika stated, emphasizing the necessity of monitoring and accountability to prevent public airwaves from normalizing harm.

PSGDN reiterated its commitment to fostering respectful dialogue, peaceful coexistence, and the preservation of human dignity for all individuals in the Pacific, including those in the LGBTQI+ community. “Faith should be a source of unity and healing, not a tool for exclusion,” Tucika concluded, highlighting the hopeful vision of a more inclusive future.
