Dengue fever continues to pose a significant public health challenge in Fiji, with the Ministry of Health reporting a total of 10,969 confirmed cases from January 1 to June 15, 2025. The outbreak has seen the Western Division emerge as the most affected region, accounting for 4,960 cases. The Central Division follows closely behind with 2,868 cases, while the Northern Division and Eastern Division reported 2,867 and 274 cases, respectively. Unfortunately, the outbreak has resulted in eight fatalities, predominantly in the Western and Northern Divisions.
Health Minister Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu highlighted that there have been a total of 2,334 hospital admissions associated with dengue complications, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. “We currently have 562 active cases under surveillance,” Dr. Lalabalavu confirmed, urging ongoing public awareness campaigns and accessibility of treatment to combat the disease effectively.
To address this outbreak, a multidisciplinary approach has been adopted, involving collaborative efforts with various sectors including the Fiji Sugar Corporation and municipal councils. Dr. Lalabalavu expressed gratitude for the support received from these organizations in tackling the health crisis. He affirmed that ongoing public health initiatives aimed at increasing awareness and controlling mosquito populations are essential, especially in the heavily impacted Western and Northern Divisions.
The recent rise in dengue cases has been attributed to environmental factors conducive to mosquito breeding, particularly following heavy rainfall. Health officials continue to encourage community engagement in prevention strategies, such as eliminating standing water and seeking prompt medical attention if symptoms arise, which align with past successful strategies during similar outbreaks.
These collective efforts between health authorities and the community signify a hopeful outlook in managing the ongoing dengue crisis. The commitment to teamwork and vigilance emphasizes the potential for controlling the outbreak and safeguarding the health and wellbeing of Fiji’s residents during this challenging time.
