The Fiji Police Force has reported concerning statistics on suicide cases from January 1 to January 22 of this year, with 63 incidents recorded compared to 66 during the same timeframe last year. Additionally, there were 44 attempted suicide cases, down from 47 in the previous year.
Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci expressed that the data is alarming and highlighted the importance of fostering a culture of acceptance and understanding given the increasing social issues society faces today.
Among the reported cases, eight suicides and five attempted suicides involved individuals under 18. The elderly, specifically those over 60, accounted for the highest number of cases with 19 suicides and two attempted suicides. The majority of the reported suicide cases were among males, with 50 incidents documented.
Commissioner Raikaci urged community leaders to assist in altering the narrative surrounding mental health. He emphasized the need for a more empathetic culture and the creation of safe spaces for open discussions.
Raikaci also pointed out the modern challenge of cyberbullying, urging Fijians to practice kindness in both real life and online interactions. The police noted that common reasons linked to suicide and attempted suicide include spousal disagreements, family issues, relationship troubles, stress, and health problems.
The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day 2024 is “Changing the Narrative,” encouraging a dialogue on mental health.
