In January, seven individuals faced a total of 11 charges related to sexual offences in Fiji, according to data released by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). These charges, formally indicted in the High Courts, included seven counts of rape, one count of indecent assault, and three counts of sexual assault.

Among the seven victims, three were minors under the age of 18, comprising six females and one male. Disturbingly, in five of the reported incidents, the victims and the alleged perpetrators were related, highlighting significant issues surrounding familial trust and safety.

A notable case involved a 36-year-old man charged with the rape of his 18-year-old daughter; however, this case was discontinued due to insufficient evidence. Similarly, a 54-year-old man faced charges of raping his 47-year-old wife, but this case was also dropped because the victim could not be reached.

In other instances, an 18-year-old was charged with the rape and sexual assault of his 13-year-old nephew, while a 23-year-old man was charged with the rape and sexual assault of his 32-year-old cousin. Additionally, a 25-year-old man was accused of raping his 15-year-old cousin.

Three of the cases were withdrawn following discontinuances due to a lack of evidence and difficulties in locating the victims.

The release of these figures underscores the ongoing challenges and serious nature of sexual violence in society, emphasizing the need for continued advocacy and support for victims. It also calls for a collective effort from the community, law enforcement, and legal systems to ensure justice and prevention of such offences in the future.

While these statistics are disheartening, they also highlight the importance of raising awareness and fostering a culture that prioritizes the safety and well-being of all individuals, particularly vulnerable populations like minors.
