A two-year-old in Fiji has been identified as the country’s youngest known Type 1 diabetes patient, as announced by Marawa Kini, the CEO of Diabetes Fiji. This alarming case reflects a broader and concerning trend of early onset diabetes among the young, with the youngest Type 2 diabetes patient being just 18 years old.

Type 1 diabetes is less common but poses a significant health challenge, particularly in Fiji, where access to essential resources such as insulin, test strips, and lenses remains limited. The situation is dire as nearly one in three diabetes cases in Fiji are diagnosed only after serious complications arise, such as stroke, infection, or amputation.

Kini warned of the implications of these trends, stating, “We are seeing people being diagnosed as young as two years old to 30 years below and above. This trend highlights the inter-aggregation crisis. This will affect productivity, economic growth, and the health system’s sustainability unless we intervene now.”

Despite providing support for approximately 90 young patients, delayed diagnosis remains prevalent, fueled by public misconceptions that hinder timely treatment and detection. Medical practitioner Dr. Ram Raju added that while Type 1 diabetes is insulin-dependent and generally affects younger individuals, it is manageable with proper care.

In previous articles, themes of advocacy for healthier lifestyles, dietary education, and support systems for young diabetics have been emphasized. For instance, initiatives like the Young Diabetes Fiji camp aim to empower children through education on self-care, nutrition, and the importance of mental health, showcasing a community commitment to raising awareness about diabetes.

The urgent need for collective action is clear, underscoring a hopeful message that with continued focus on education, lifestyle changes, and community support, Fiji can foster healthier habits among its youth and combat the growing diabetes crisis effectively. By addressing misconceptions and enhancing awareness, there are promising avenues for improving outcomes and the quality of life for young diabetics in Fiji.
