The Fiji Medical Association (FMA) has urged the government to prioritize the declaration of an HIV outbreak due to the concerning increase in HIV cases within the country. FMA President Dr. Alipate Vakamocea expressed deep concern over the alarming 241 percent rise in infections between 2010 and 2023.
The Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) reported over 550 new HIV cases in the first half of this year, marking a significant 33 percent increase compared to the previous year. Dr. Vakamocea highlighted that the surge poses a serious public health threat exacerbated by deficiencies in testing, treatment, and prevention efforts.
While sexual transmission remains the primary method of HIV transmission in Fiji, there is a troubling rise in cases linked to injectable drug use, which correlates with the ongoing hard drug crisis in the country. The FMA has put forth three key recommendations to the MHMS: officially declare an HIV outbreak, enhance targeted testing and treatment programs, and improve data collection systems for better analysis and reporting.
The association stressed that recognizing the surge in HIV cases as an outbreak would facilitate resource mobilization and foster international collaboration, similar to the response during the COVID-19 pandemic. The FMA is prepared to support the Health Ministry and believes that a coordinated, evidence-based approach is essential to control the HIV epidemic and prevent further loss of life. They are calling for immediate action in line with the Fiji HIV and Illicit Drug Surge Strategy 2024-2026.
With concerted efforts and commitment from both the government and healthcare professionals, there is optimism that Fiji can tackle this public health challenge effectively, turning the tide against HIV and protecting the health of its citizens.
In summary, the FMA is advocating for swift government action to address the urgent rise in HIV cases in Fiji, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and comprehensive strategies to combat this public health threat.
