The President and Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, has raised grave concerns regarding the rising HIV epidemic in Fiji, particularly within the iTaukei community, which accounts for 89% of reported cases. Speaking at a recent vakasenuqanuqa ceremony in Somosomo on Taveuni, he emphasized the urgent need for community action to prevent what he described as a potential disaster for the iTaukei people.

Ratu Naiqama highlighted the alarming fact that HIV is not only spreading through sexual contact but also through the sharing of needles among drug users. “People are sharing needles for drugs such as methamphetamine,” he noted, illustrating the growing intersection of drug abuse and HIV transmission. He urged the community to acknowledge the seriousness of the issue, stating, “Don’t act surprised or laugh about it — this is a serious issue.”

This situation mirrors broader concerns raised in previous reports, which indicate a troubling rise in HIV cases in Fiji, particularly among the youth. Recent statistics revealed that there were 522 new HIV cases reported in a single year, marking a 33% increase compared to the previous year. Of these, many cases were linked to injectable drug use, which poses a significant risk to the younger population.

Concerns have been echoed by local leaders, including Opposition MP Jone Usamate, who described the rise in HIV cases as “shocking” and a critical issue necessitating immediate attention. He pointed out that the youth are particularly vulnerable and emphasized the importance of proactive engagement in community activities to steer them away from drug use and risky behaviors.

Proposals for combating the HIV epidemic include community education and awareness campaigns to inform families about the dangers of drug use and HIV. The hope is that through collective action, increased visibility of the issue, and a united community effort, Fiji can navigate this health crisis and foster a safer environment for future generations.

The combination of awareness and community responsibility offers a hopeful approach to a challenging public health issue, emphasizing the potential for positive change through collective action and support.
