The economic impact of violence against children in Fiji has been estimated at an alarming $460 million, according to Lynda Tabuya, the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection. This figure represents about 4 percent of the nation’s annual GDP and was revealed in a study conducted in collaboration with UNICEF on the Economic Costs of Violence Against Children.

Tabuya expressed concern over the findings, noting that a staggering 81 percent of children aged between one and 14 years have experienced some form of violent discipline, while 65 percent have faced psychological aggression and 68 percent have endured physical punishment at some point in their lives. The survey also highlighted a troubling phenomenon termed “poly-victimization,” where individual children are exposed to multiple forms of abuse.

In response to these troubling statistics, the recent passage of the Childcare and Protection Bill signifies a pivotal shift in the government’s approach. The bill aims to modernize child protection policies by moving away from the outdated philosophy of merely rescuing and removing children from harmful environments. Instead, it emphasizes the importance of supporting children’s holistic development within their own families and communities.

Minister Tabuya stated that the national development plan’s goal is to eradicate violence against children through thoughtful policies and coordinated referral networks. The passing of the Childcare and Protection Bill in Parliament marks a hopeful step toward creating a safer and more nurturing environment for children in Fiji.

By addressing these issues head-on, Fiji is taking significant strides to protect its most vulnerable citizens. The government’s commitment to reforming child protection laws shows a promising future where children can thrive in safe, supportive environments.

Summary: Fiji’s Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection revealed that violence against children costs the nation $460 million annually, accounting for 4% of GDP. A new Childcare and Protection Bill aims to address these issues by focusing on holistic development rather than outdated rescue practices.
