The Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) has announced an updated format for the Fiji FA Women’s Super League, reducing the number of participating teams from seven to six. This strategic decision is aimed at intensifying the competition and ensuring a higher standard of football for fans.
Shaniya Shankar, the competitions manager for Fiji FA, stated that the new structure focuses on featuring only the most competitive teams, promising exhilarating matches throughout the season. This change aligns with the organization’s broader vision to elevate women’s football standards and prepare players for more challenging regional and international competitions.
To finalize the six teams for the upcoming season, a round-robin playoff will take place involving the three lowest-ranked teams from last season: Suva Women, Tailevu Naitasiri Women, and Nadroga Women. The results from this playoff will determine which teams earn their spots in the revamped Super League.
Despite the reduced number of teams, the league aims to foster greater competitiveness and increase efficiency. Shankar emphasized that this revised format will enable districts to fully focus on presenting exceptional performances on the field.
Adding to the positive developments in women’s football in Fiji, the BA Women FC side has qualified for the OFC Women’s Champions League in Tahiti, a notable achievement that reflects the progress of women’s football in the region.
This restructuring not only highlights Fiji FA’s commitment to enhancing the overall quality of women’s football but also signifies an ongoing investment in the sport’s future. As excitement builds for the upcoming season, fans and players alike can look forward to a showcase of talent on an international stage, reinforcing the hopeful trajectory for women’s football in Fiji.
