The Fiji FA Women’s Super League is set to showcase a new and improved structure this season, featuring six competing teams instead of the previous seven. This change aims to enhance the caliber of competition and ensure a higher standard of football.
Shaniya Shankar, the Fiji FA Competitions Manager, stated that the revised league format focuses on comprising only the most competitive teams, which is expected to provide fans with exciting, high-quality matches. “This change aligns with Fiji FA’s vision to raise the standard of women’s football and prepare players for more competitive environments, including regional and international tournaments,” Shankar noted.
While the previous format with seven teams allowed for broader participation and development opportunities, the decision to streamline the league is a strategic effort to promote competitiveness and efficiency. Shankar emphasized that the revised structure would help in maximizing the talent and skills of both players and coaches.
To finalize the six teams for the upcoming league, a round-robin playoff will occur next month involving the three lowest-ranked teams from last season: Suva Women, Tailevu Naitasiri Women, and Nadroga Women. This crucial playoff will determine which teams will earn their spots in the Super League for the 2025 season, setting the stage for an electrifying competition ahead.
This restructuring not only demonstrates Fiji FA’s commitment to enhancing women’s football but also signifies a broader investment in the sport’s development within the region, ultimately promising a bright future for female athletes in Fiji as they gear up for greater challenges on both national and international stages.
