The Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) has launched new grassroots goalkeeper training programs across its academies in Ba, Labasa, and Suva, reflecting a dedicated effort to nurture young football talent. This initiative aims to equip aspiring goalkeepers with the technical and tactical skills essential for advancing in competitive football.

The training in Ba will be spearheaded by Sanaila Waqanicakau, the national goalkeeper coach, whose extensive experience in high-level football is expected to greatly enhance the learning experience for participants. In Labasa, the program will be led by Shamal Kumar, a former national goalkeeper recognized for his deep understanding of the game, which is anticipated to inspire local talent. Meanwhile, in Suva, participants will benefit from the expertise of Ricardo Ferrando Gusta, an experienced goalkeeper coach from Spain, who has volunteered to lead the training sessions. Gusta’s international perspective will introduce participants to advanced techniques and strategies utilized in European football.

This grassroots program forms a crucial part of Fiji FA’s broader strategy to improve football at the foundational level, particularly focusing on specialized positions like goalkeeping. It aims to identify and cultivate promising talent, thereby enhancing the quality of goalkeepers in Fiji’s domestic leagues and national teams.

Fiji FA’s Head of Talent Development South, Sushil Singh, emphasized the importance of goalkeepers in any team and expressed confidence that with skilled coaches and international expertise, this initiative will produce remarkable results. He strongly encouraged young players from across Fiji to participate and take advantage of the opportunity to learn from some of the best mentors in the field.

Moreover, this program reflects Fiji FA’s ongoing commitment to youth development, paralleling other recent initiatives meant to engage and nurture young athletes. By fostering not only athletic skills but also essential life skills such as teamwork and discipline, the program aims to contribute positively to the personal growth of participants.

In summary, the introduction of these grassroots goalkeeper training programs signifies a hopeful step toward building a strong foundation for football in Fiji. This initiative not only seeks to develop athletic talent but also aims to instill a lifelong passion for the sport among the youth, promising to strengthen community bonds through sport and foster a new generation of football talent in the country.
