Former Australian soccer star Luke Wilkshire is set to be the chief guest at the Fiji Football Association Awards Night on December 1, taking place at the Crowne Plaza in Nadi. His participation has been highlighted by Fiji Football Association CEO Mohammed Yusuf, who described it as a privilege to welcome a FIFA Legend to the occasion.
Wilkshire’s impressive international career is expected to serve as an inspiration for Fiji’s football community. During his visit, he will also attend the Flick Hygiene Pacific Cup matches at Churchill Park in Lautoka and engage with the players at the Fiji Ba Academy.
The awards ceremony, which is making its return after a three-year break, will honor Fiji’s football excellence with 16 categories recognizing players, teams, officials, and other contributors to the sport.
Known for his tenure with clubs such as Middlesbrough, Bristol City, FC Twente, and Feyenoord, Wilkshire played a vital role in Australian football. His accolades include 80 caps for the Socceroos, scoring eight goals, and participation in two FIFA World Cups (2006 and 2010), the 2015 AFC Asian Cup-winning team, and the 2004 Athens Olympics. After retiring, Wilkshire transitioned into coaching, where he remains a respected figure in Australia for his skills, strategy, and leadership.
This event not only celebrates individual and collective achievements in Fiji’s football but also reinforces the bond and inspiration exchanged between nations through the love of the sport. It is a promising opportunity for aspiring athletes to learn from a seasoned professional, boosting the local football scene’s development and enthusiasm.
