The Fijian Government has announced that the Cabinet has officially endorsed a thorough evaluation of the Valelevu Ground as the selected location for the nation’s new hospital. This decision follows a comprehensive multi-criteria assessment of various potential sites.

According to a recent statement, the development of the new hospital is an integral part of the CWM Hospital Redevelopment Project, which is being supported by the Australian Government. Australia plays a pivotal role in assisting Fiji with the development of a comprehensive infrastructure master plan for the national referral hospital.

In addition to the master plan, Australia has pledged grant funding specifically for urgent upgrades at the existing CWM Hospital. The initial phase of work—which includes essential repairs such as fixing roof leaks, upgrading acute wards, and improving potable water and sewage systems—is currently underway and is expected to be completed by early 2026.

Following the first phase, a second wave of vital upgrades will be implemented, ensuring that the hospital remains operational while further evaluations for long-term redevelopment are conducted.

Furthermore, the World Bank is actively advancing initiatives to build a new radiotherapy center at a different location within the CWM complex. This center will significantly enhance access to cancer treatment and related services, marking a crucial step in improving healthcare access for the population.

This concerted effort towards enhancing healthcare infrastructure in Fiji, backed by international support, reflects a strong commitment to providing better medical services and facilities for the community. The projects, both for the new hospital and the upgrades to CWM Hospital, promise to make a substantial impact on the health sector in Fiji, offering hope for improved health outcomes for all citizens.
