Fiji, along with other Pacific Island nations, is just beginning to explore its potential in the United States tourism market, which is a significant opportunity for growth. The US ranks as Fiji’s second-largest tourist market, following Australia and New Zealand, highlighting the untapped possibilities for the region.

Christopher Cocker, the CEO of the South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO), emphasized during an interview at The Pacific Agenda investment summit in Honolulu that there are promising niche tourism segments ripe for development. These include adventure and diving opportunities that align with the region’s natural attractions.

Cocker pointed out the crucial role of governmental commitment and collaboration with development partners to realize this potential. He noted that many delegates at the summit expressed their enthusiasm for tourism and its critical importance to the Pacific Islands. Discussions revealed a collective agreement on the need for improved connectivity through more frequent and affordable direct flights to the region.

Infrastructure development is another priority, as highlighted by Cocker. He underscored the need for enhanced airport facilities, hotel accommodations, and transportation networks, all of which are essential for bolstering tourism in the area. Access to affordable energy and advancements in digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, were also recognized as vital components for progress.

Cocker conveyed specific requests from the SPTO to the US government regarding support for regional initiatives that foster connections between local businesses and US-based private sectors. Positive discussions on infrastructure and connectivity improvements were noted, with each country engaging in its own bilateral conversations on the matter.

He specifically mentioned the potential collaboration with Alaska and Hawaiian airlines, both part of the oneworld Alliance, which could significantly enhance flights within and outside the region, opening doors to the North American market.

In terms of tourism statistics, Fiji saw an increase in visitor arrivals last year, with 986,367 visitors, a slight rise from the previous year. The top three source countries for visitors remained Australia, New Zealand, and the US, with 118,148 visitors from America.

This burgeoning interest in Pacific tourism, coupled with strategic developments in infrastructure and connectivity, positions Fiji and its neighboring island nations for a promising future in attracting more international tourists.
