Schools are being encouraged to implement policies that allow students dissatisfied with their examination results to repeat their current grade, offering them an invaluable second chance to enhance their academic performance. This proposition comes from Education Minister Aseri Radrodro, who has expressed concern over some schools that have either refused to permit repeats or have established policies that hinder such opportunities.
This initiative follows a decline in examination results observed at various educational levels last year. The Minister is optimistic that by allowing students to repeat their grades, schools can significantly bolster both academic performance and overall student well-being. Radrodro emphasized that this approach targets not only the academic struggles of students but also their emotional challenges, particularly for those impacted by learning disruptions or personal difficulties.
“I am urging schools not to turn away students who request to repeat, simply because they are slower academically. That is why we have introduced this repeat policy — to keep children in school and ensure they build a strong foundation before moving on to the next academic year,” Radrodro stated.
Additionally, he noted that this policy enables teachers to provide focused assistance and support to students who may be academically challenged, allowing for more tailored teaching strategies. Muniappa Goundar, General Secretary of the Fiji Teachers Union, agreed with the initiative, citing that past experiences have shown significant improvements in students’ results when they are given the opportunity to re-sit their form.
This initiative not only promotes academic efficiency among students but also fosters a solid educational foundation, better preparing them for their upcoming academic challenges. It signifies a positive step towards creating a more supportive and inclusive educational environment for all learners, ensuring they have the necessary tools to succeed.
