The Government of Fiji is considering a significant policy change that would require shipping vessels to have insurance for shipwrecks before they enter Fiji’s waters. Public Works and Transport Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau emphasized the importance of tightening regulations within the shipping industry as part of efforts to eliminate derelict vessels clogging Suva Harbour.
In a recent statement, Tuisawau noted that the Cabinet has approved a comprehensive review of the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) Act of 2009, which has been considered too lenient by previous administrations. One of the key areas identified for enhancement is ensuring that shipping companies possess adequate insurance coverage for potential shipwrecks prior to their arrival in Fiji.
“This is crucial not just for the protection of our waters but also for ensuring that shipping companies are held accountable,” Tuisawau remarked. He explained that there have been instances where the government was unaware of new vessels purchased by shipping companies until they were already en route to Fiji, highlighting a need for better oversight in the ship purchasing process.
The minister also discussed the challenges posed by the age and condition of vessels entering Fiji, arguing that there should be improved coordination among the MSAF, Fiji Ports Corporation Ltd, and foreign governments to manage approvals for vessels traveling to Fiji. Additionally, the review aims to address loopholes within the existing regulations that may allow non-compliant vessels to enter Fijian waters.
Despite the challenges, Tuisawau expressed optimism regarding the ongoing efforts to remove derelict vessels, mentioning that a dedicated committee comprising different stakeholders, including the MSAF and the Navy, is working efficiently to tackle this urgent issue.
The removal of derelict vessels is not only crucial for improving maritime safety but also addresses the environmental concerns associated with abandoned ships, which can significantly impact marine ecosystems. Tuisawau’s commitment to the review process signals a proactive approach toward ensuring the safety and sustainability of Fiji’s waters, underscoring the government’s dedication to preserving the ecological integrity of the region while fostering a safer maritime environment for all.
