Local government elections in Fiji are anticipated to take place next year, as confirmed by the Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, in a statement to FBC News. The coalition government is dedicated to fulfilling its campaign commitment to reinstating municipal elections, which were previously abolished by the former administration.
While an exact date for the elections has not yet been disclosed, Nalumisa assured that preparations are in progress and further details are expected to be released later today. “We are targeting next year; we are not announcing the date but the process we are going to go through before we will announce the date,” he stated.
Critical to this initiative is the ongoing review of the Local Government Act, aimed at modernizing operations and advancing the digitalization of services, including town and country planning. The coalition government has emphasized that restoring local democracy ranks high on their agenda, a commitment that has been echoed throughout their time in office.
Additionally, it is worth noting that the next General Election in Fiji is set to occur sometime between August 7th and February 6th, 2027, highlighting a significant political timeframe as the government works towards implementing these essential democratic processes. This renewed focus on local governance not only revitalizes political engagement but also aims at enhancing community representation and service delivery throughout the nation.
