A new National Health Commission is set to be established to oversee and enhance the functions of the Ministry of Health in Fiji. This announcement was made by Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu during the opening of the Fiji Health Transformation Summit 2025, held in Lami today.
Dr. Lalabalavu confirmed that the groundwork for the commission is already in progress, and further discussions regarding its establishment will take place over the course of the three-day summit. This commission aims to operate independently, focusing on health issues in Fiji, akin to other existing commissions. The minister emphasized the importance of stakeholder involvement to ensure the commission effectively meets the health needs of the nation.
The summit will also delve into the Health System Review conducted by the Asian Development Bank, which is expected to inform the creation of a long-term national strategic health plan. Additionally, key discussions will concentrate on reviewing pertinent legislation within the public health sector.
As the summit unfolds, it promises to provide vital insights and possible reforms that will address the evolving healthcare needs and challenges facing Fiji. By the end of the summit on Friday, the outcomes are anticipated to significantly influence the trajectory of the country’s health system for the better. This initiative represents a hopeful step toward improving healthcare services and ensuring a healthier future for all Fijians.
