Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has dismissed allegations made by Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry regarding the recent Supreme Court opinion on constitutional reform in Fiji, specifically that it increases vulnerability for the Indo-Fijian community. Rabuka emphasized that a referendum, part of the constitutional change process, ensures that every community, including Indo-Fijians, partakes equally as citizens in the decision-making process.

Rabuka reassured that any potential constitutional amendments would require broad-based support from the population, ensuring proposals are inclusive and non-discriminatory. In contrast, Chaudhry has advocated for political negotiations and consensus in constitutional reforms, which Rabuka critiqued as limiting and often driven by “backroom politics” among select leaders. He argued that referendums promote transparency and allow the public a direct voice in the changes.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed his government’s commitment to an inclusive, participatory constitutional change process, viewing the prospect of Fiji holding its first referendum as a historic move towards enhancing democracy. This initiative follows ongoing discussions and challenges surrounding the constitutional amendment process, which requires balancing government powers with citizen rights, as well as accountability and inclusivity within the nation’s multi-ethnic society.

Historically, the constitutional amendment path in Fiji has encountered obstacles due to stringent requirements for parliamentary and public approval. Recent discussions highlighted attempts to lower the parliamentary approval threshold from 75% to 66%, met with resistance citing potential threats to minority protections and the need for transparent reform processes.

This ongoing debate reflects a pivotal period in Fiji’s political landscape, emphasizing the need for cooperation and constructive dialogue. A focus on inclusivity and broad participation holds promise for a governance framework that supports unity and truly reflects the aspirations of all Fijians. By fostering a democratic, participatory approach, Fiji can work towards a future where every community’s voice is valued and protected within its constitutional framework.
