Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed optimism about the impending Nations Championship, highlighting its potential to provide essential game time for the Fiji Water Flying Fijians while also enhancing the team’s reputation on the international rugby stage. This inaugural tournament, set to occur every two years in non-World Cup seasons, marks a significant milestone as Fiji’s first engagement in a formally structured competition of this nature.
Rabuka emphasized that the championship could have broader impacts on the Fijian economy, particularly through a boost in tourism. He stated that this tournament is not merely another series of matches but a significant opportunity for Fiji to establish its presence in global rugby, competing against elite teams from both the northern and southern hemispheres.
Fiji’s journey in the Nations Championship will commence on July 4, when they face Wales in Cardiff. They will later host England on July 11, before tackling Scotland at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh on July 18. This series presents a unique chance for the Flying Fijians to shine and could stimulate greater interest and investment in Fiji’s rugby and tourism sectors, fostering a positive ripple effect throughout the nation.
