The Fijian Ministry of Trade is actively seeking to engage Chinese investors to enhance the value of timber products that are currently exported to China. Permanent Secretary for Trade, Shaheen Ali, has emphasized the importance of encouraging investments in Fiji to develop market-ready products from local mahogany, pine, and native timber, which are highly coveted in China for high-quality furniture.

Ali highlighted that simply exporting raw timber to China does not fulfill market demands. Instead, establishing production facilities in Fiji would not only boost the value of these products but also cater more effectively to the preferences of Chinese consumers. The current trade relationship is significant, with annual trade between Fiji and China reaching around $1 billion.

In addition to timber, Fiji exports a variety of goods to China, including wood chips, mineral water, fish, and tropical woods. However, the country also imports a range of products such as tires, cars, and electronics. The Ministry has identified key products that Fiji can market in China, including precious stones, pearls, healthcare products, and virgin coconut oil-based items, among others.

Ali expressed optimism about increasing trade ties as Fiji already has flight connections to Hong Kong and plans to expand direct flights to Mainland China, which is expected to further enhance trade opportunities.

Positive Outlook: The push for Chinese investment could pave the way for economic growth in Fiji, creating jobs and fostering industry expansion while promoting Fijian products in international markets.

Summary: The Fijian government is eager to attract Chinese investors to boost the value of timber exports by setting up production facilities locally, enhancing trade relations as Fiji looks to expand its market presence in China with various high-quality products.
