Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh is expressing optimism about resolving the ongoing stand-off between Energy Fiji Ltd and approximately 500 of its employees. The workers had previously issued a strike notice in December through the Construction, Energy and Timber Workers Union (CETWUF) concerning salary disputes anticipated for 2024 and 2025.

The potential walk-out was scheduled for February 15 if their demands were not addressed, prompting a voluntary mediation session on January 19, which involved representatives from both parties alongside the Ministry of Employment and Industrial Relations. Mr. Singh reported that the initial mediation session was productive and laid the groundwork for further discussions.

“The first session of mediation went very well,” he stated, indicating a hopeful outlook for negotiations. He also mentioned that the next meeting is scheduled for the upcoming Monday and expressed confidence in reaching a settlement within the week.

This proactive approach highlights the government’s commitment to facilitating a resolution that meets the needs of both the employees and Energy Fiji Ltd, ultimately promoting stability within the sector.
