Fiji Water Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is optimistic about the nation’s prospects as they prepare for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. Fiji has been placed in Pool C, which includes formidable opponents Argentina, Spain, and Canada, under a revised competition format set to take place in Australia.

Byrne perceives Argentina as the most challenging team in the pool, remarking that Fiji has not faced them since 2003. He recognizes that the upcoming Nations Championship presents a crucial opportunity for Fiji to evaluate Argentina’s capabilities in advance of their anticipated World Cup match. “With Argentina being part of the Rugby Championship, they’ll be playing all the Six Nations teams that we’ll face, so we’ll get a good chance to observe how they perform against the same opposition. This will allow us to make direct comparisons, which is really valuable,” he stated.

While Fiji historically has a strong record against Spain and Canada, Byrne is wary of underestimating these teams. He acknowledges that past tournaments often see teams elevate their performance significantly, leading to unexpected results. “Obviously, Spain and Canada are teams we’ve played in recent years, so we know their style and recognize they improve every year,” he explained. “Spain were better this year than last, Canada improved this year as well and they will continue to get stronger.”

Byrne’s main objective is to ensure that Fiji wins its pool and heads into the Round of 16 in a strong position. To qualify for the knockout stages, Fiji must finish as one of the top two teams in Pool C or secure a spot as one of the four best third-placed teams across all pools. The tournament format allows for this, with 16 out of the 24 participating teams advancing past the pool stages.

In preparing for the intense and physically demanding nature of the World Cup, Byrne stressed the significance of having a deep, well-managed squad. The quarter-finals present an especially challenging scenario, requiring teams to navigate through four high-pressure matches.

With the right focus and dedication, Fiji aims to harness its strengths and improve upon past performances, fostering hope for a memorable World Cup campaign.
