Mohammed Hassan Khan, a member of the National Council of Older Persons (NCOP), has highlighted the increasing hardships faced by Fiji’s senior citizens and underscored the urgent need for enhanced social and economic protections. He emphasized that pensions serve as a critical safety net and must be adjusted to align with the escalating cost of living.
Khan pointed out that many older citizens, who rely on modest pensions, family assistance allowances, or dwindling savings, are struggling to make ends meet as prices continue to rise across various essential sectors. He expressed concern that for those without a fixed income, financial difficulties have notably intensified. The pressures from rising fuel prices, increased food and transportation costs, and the lingering effects of the global financial crisis, compounded by the devaluation of the Fijian dollar, have exacerbated the situation for many seniors.
Khan estimated that a 20 percent increase in pensions and allowances is necessary to significantly alleviate some of these pressures and restore purchasing power for this vulnerable demographic. He criticized the reduction of pensions by the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) in 2012, arguing that pensioners who have contributed to the system for decades deserve secure retirement benefits.
“Pensions provide dignity, independence, and stability, helping to reduce poverty and reliance within families,” Khan stated, reinforcing the essential role that pensions play in allowing older individuals to live autonomously and with respect.
To address these challenges, Khan proposed several initiatives, including free medical services, tax breaks for families taking care of elderly relatives, a minimum monthly allowance of $200 for those without income, subsidized transport, and the elimination of taxes on retirement savings. He urged immediate action, reminding the government that pensions should be viewed as a fundamental right.
“There is a compelling case for increasing pensions to ensure income security and uphold the dignity of our older citizens,” Khan asserted. His statements reflect a growing concern for the welfare of Fiji’s senior population, highlighting the need for proactive measures to ensure a better quality of life for this group.
