The Assistant Minister for Transport in Fiji, Naisa Tuinaceva, announced in Parliament that the nation currently has approximately 240,000 registered vehicles on its roads. This significant increase over the past decade has prompted the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to enhance its vehicle inspection and compliance systems to better manage the growing demand.
Tuinaceva noted that the rise in vehicle numbers has far surpassed the current inspection capacity. To tackle this challenge, the LTA is expanding its network of authorized motor vehicle inspection agencies using a controlled outsourcing model. The new framework will focus on improving accessibility and efficiency, boosting compliance, and fostering greater accountability through partnerships.
“Our goal is to develop a modern transport system that prioritizes safety for all users, whether they live in urban centers or rural areas,” said Tuinaceva. He mentioned that the LTA is also strengthening its quality management systems, particularly for public service vehicle (PSV) operators, who are required to hold a valid Quality Management System (QMS) certification. This certification ensures adherence to essential maintenance schedules and safety protocols as established by the LTA.
The recent improvements come in response to an ongoing commitment by the government to enhance road safety across Fiji. This includes new measures announced earlier aimed at ensuring that vehicles imported from abroad meet safety standards before they arrive in the country. The LTA’s collaborations with various agencies have contributed to a comprehensive approach to enforcing compliance and improving public safety.
As Fiji experiences this rapid transformation in its transport systems, there’s a renewed optimism regarding the positive impact of these initiatives. By focusing on a modern and inclusive approach to vehicle management, the government aims not only to improve existing infrastructure but also to enhance the overall safety of all road users. These progressive measures signal a promising future for transport safety in Fiji, with heightened accountability and improved service standards leading the way.
