Fiji Expands Fire Assistance Grant to More Homes with New Eligibility Rules

The Fire Assistance Grant, established in 2015, plays a vital role in aiding low- and middle-income families with annual earnings of $50,000 or less, whose homes fall victim to accidental fires. This initiative provides eligible households with financial assistance of up to $5,000, contingent upon meeting specific requirements such as home ownership, lack of insurance, and confirmation from both the National Fire Authority and the Police that the fire was indeed accidental.

Since its inception, the program has successfully assisted 248 households, disbursing a total of $1.245 million in government aid. The grant has notably extended its reach to rural and maritime communities, where local Provincial Administrators and Roko Tui offices play a crucial role in verifying ownership and eligibility. This expansion has been significant given the challenges residents face in accessing government services in these more remote areas.

In a noteworthy development in 2023, the grant’s eligibility criteria were broadened to include agricultural lease holders and members of landowning units residing on Mataqali land beyond village boundaries, further enhancing support for those affected by fires.

Minister of Housing, Maciu Nalumisa, expressed the ministry’s commitment to fortifying the scheme by refining policies and collaborating with stakeholders. He emphasized the importance of expanding access to ensure that even more families impacted by fire incidents can rapidly and safely rebuild their homes. The ongoing efforts reflect a dedication to community resilience and support for those in need following devastating circumstances.
