The Health Ministry in Fiji is intensifying its initiatives to tackle the escalating health challenges faced by the elderly population. Josifini Tuiloma, the Head of Physiotherapy at the Ministry, highlighted that many individuals over the age of 50 struggle with daily tasks and may require assistance with walking. Tuiloma emphasized the importance of regular exercise to maintain an active body and healthy blood circulation.

In addition to advocating for exercise, Tuiloma stressed the necessity of consulting qualified physiotherapists to receive proper training and avoid tendon and ligament injuries. The Ministry is focusing on expanding its training programs to reach grassroots communities, including rural and maritime areas. This initiative also aims to encourage young people to prioritize their health early on to prevent complications in the later stages of life.

This effort by the Health Ministry complements similar actions by other governmental bodies in Fiji, such as the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection. They have undertaken measures to improve healthcare accessibility and social support for seniors, recognizing the vital role of community engagement in supporting the elderly. This holistic approach underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the well-being of its elderly citizens, addressing not only their physical health but also their social support needs.

The proactive stance taken by the Ministry aims to create a healthier environment for seniors, thereby improving their quality of life. By focusing on preventive care and a community-centric approach, the Ministry hopes to alleviate future health complications, emphasizing the importance of early intervention and continuous care across all age groups. This comprehensive health strategy signifies a promising direction towards fostering a society that values and respects its elderly members, contributing to a more inclusive and supportive community.
