The Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport has taken a significant step towards enhancing the standards of engineering in the country by establishing the Engineers’ Registration Board. This initiative, set up under the Engineers’ Registration Act of 1976, mandates that all practicing engineers must register with the Board.
Permanent Secretary Paula Baleilevuka emphasized that this move aims to bolster professional standards, ensure public safety, and enhance accountability within the engineering sector. The Board, composed of eight members, convened for its inaugural meeting on December 5, 2025. During this meeting, members discussed various administrative and management aspects in preparation for the upcoming registration process.
Baleilevuka underscored the importance of transparency and stakeholder engagement, noting that public consultations will be held as part of the process. The Ministry anticipates that the registration of engineers will commence in the third quarter of 2026, following the Board’s completion of its preparations and consultations.
This initiative reflects the Ministry’s dedication to maintaining high infrastructure standards and fostering professional excellence throughout Fiji. The establishment of the Engineers’ Registration Board is a vital measure to ensure that only qualified individuals practice in the field, thereby boosting public trust in engineering projects and promoting safety and quality in public infrastructure.
