The Minister for Policing, Ioane Naivalarua, has called on churches to collaborate with the government and law enforcement to combat the escalating impact of drugs on families and communities in Fiji. This appeal was made during the official launch of a National Pastoral Response to Drugs workshop in Suva.

Naivalarua emphasized that addressing drug-related harm is not solely a policing issue but requires robust community engagement. He acknowledged the essential role of law enforcement while asserting that policing alone cannot heal communities.

The Minister outlined a dual approach to tackling the drug problem, which merges enforcement with prevention and community involvement. He indicated that law enforcement agencies will persist in focusing on border control, investigations, arrests, and prosecutions, but added that churches and community organizations should contribute to awareness, prevention, early intervention, and family support.

Describing this strategy as a balanced response, Naivalarua aims to reduce both the supply of drugs and the demand within communities. He noted that this initiative aligns with the Government’s National Counter Narcotics Strategy for 2023–2028. However, he emphasized that long-term success hinges on fostering strong partnerships beyond government bodies.

“This is not only a crime issue. Drugs are affecting families, villages, schools, workplaces, and churches,” Naivalarua stated. He encouraged church leaders to unite and stay engaged with the challenges faced by their communities, particularly young individuals grappling with addiction and related social issues.

Additionally, he clarified that this initiative is not about the government directing churches but rather about fostering collaboration and shared responsibility to safeguard communities and future generations. Key officials, including Pio Tikoduadua, Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, and Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu were present at the launch, highlighting the collective commitment toward addressing this pressing concern in society.

As Fiji moves forward, the emphasis on collaboration between churches, the government, and law enforcement holds promise for creating stronger, more resilient communities in the fight against drug abuse.
