Fiji Rugby has received approval to relocate its Nations Championship Test match against England to a neutral venue within England. Initially slated to be played in South Africa on July 11, this match was categorized as a home fixture for Fiji in the inaugural Nations Championship. The decision to change the location follows a request from the Fiji Rugby Union to organizers, aiming to enhance revenue through ticket sales.
The move has garnered support from key rugby governing bodies, including World Rugby, Six Nations, and SANZAAR, though they stipulated that the match must not take place at Twickenham to maintain competition integrity. Everton’s newly opened Hill Dickinson Stadium has emerged as the front-runner for this important fixture, although discussions are still underway and no contracts have been finalized.
The switch was deemed necessary due to the limited availability of suitable venues in Fiji and reflects ongoing efforts to bolster the financial sustainability of smaller rugby unions. Major venues in England, such as Wembley, Emirates Stadium, and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, are not available during July, making Everton’s 53,000-seat capacity stadium a strong candidate for hosting the match.
Should this change be confirmed, it would mark a rare occasion for England to play an international Test match away from Twickenham, presenting a significant commercial opportunity for Fiji Rugby. The details regarding the venues for Fiji’s other Nations Championship home games against Wales and Scotland are still to be announced. This pivot not only showcases Fiji Rugby’s adaptability but also highlights the importance of financial viability for nations competing on the global stage.
