The Ministry of Employment has received grievances from employers who allege that some local workers are misusing sick and annual leave provisions, leading businesses to consider hiring foreign workers. Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh confirmed that these issues have been raised by employers in various forums.

Acknowledging the complaints, Mr. Singh emphasized that fostering constructive workplace relations and enhancing productivity is a shared responsibility between employers and employees. He stated that the Government has implemented several measures to make employment more appealing for local workers, including raising the minimum wage.

“It’s a two-way thing, it’s not a one-way thing,” Mr. Singh remarked, urging employers to treat their workers fairly. He pointed out that effective people management continues to pose challenges for many workplaces, emphasizing the crucial role played by supervisors, managers, and human resource personnel in maintaining overall productivity.

“I also believe that a happy worker is a productive worker,” Mr. Singh added, highlighting the need for fair treatment and adequate remuneration for workers to ensure productivity. He reminded employees that while the Government strives to ensure fair treatment and proper earnings, workers also hold the responsibility to fulfill their job roles effectively.

To employers, Mr. Singh advised, “Please do not shortchange workers. Make sure that you pay all their benefits so that we are able to attract those workers and they continue to produce for us.” He also called on citizens and employees to respect the rights of foreign workers, affirming that they are entitled to the same protections under Fijian laws. This inclusion indicates an effort to ensure that all workers, regardless of nationality, receive equitable treatment within the workplace.

This proactive stance by the Government reflects a commitment to improving working conditions and enhancing productivity, suggesting a hopeful path forward for both local and foreign workers alike.
